Where the figures come from

Counts of how many people carry a name are taken from the United States Census Bureau’s published name tabulations. The Census Bureau publishes nothing for a name carried by fewer than a hundred people, and neither do we. Pronunciations come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. Meanings and origins come from dictionaries of the nineteenth century that are out of copyright.

What the figures are not

A count is a count of people recorded in a census, not of people alive today, and not of anyone in particular. A meaning is one reading recorded by one lexicographer, often argued over by others; where two sources disagree we state one and name where it came from. A name’s origin describes the word, not the people who carry it.

Anything we calculate ourselves — shares, rankings, comparisons between states, the fit between a first name and a surname — is our own arithmetic on those sources, and is marked as such where it appears.

Mistakes

The data is large and the sources are old; errors are possible and corrections are welcome. We make no warranty that any figure is accurate, current or fit for a particular purpose, and we are not liable for decisions taken on the strength of it.
